I lived In Nigeria for 10 years of my life, then I briefly moved to Maryland and now i live in California. The amount of time it takes to get from Nigeria to California is about 17 hours. Though these two places are so far away from each other and have their differences, they have many similarities as well. Although I was born in Chicago, Illinois, I never spent an extensive amount of time there, and there never really experienced what it was like. I lived in Nigeria for a total of ten years and now live in Berkeley.
I lived in the major city in Nigeria which was called Lagos. There were about 21 million people living there, meaning there is a lot of traffic and it was a very hectic city. Now, I live in Berkeley. Though it is much smaller, there is a population of about 117,000 people. These two cities not only differ in size but also in time difference. There is a time difference of eight hours between these two cities.
While living in Nigeria, I learned a lot about the culture and its people. I noticed that because there are millions on people living in the city of Lagos, the amount of diversity in the city was plenty. There were all types of people from around the world in Lagos. Due to the dense amount of oil in Nigeria, this resource to many is seen as a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because there is a lot of money flowing in and out of Nigeria which helps its economy but because of the high demand of the resource, there is a large amount of corruption, leaving majority of its population poor and helpless.
I started living in Nigeria from the age of 4 so I consider it my home. My parents live there presently and most of my extended family too. I am 19 years old now and though I recently moved to Berkeley, I see the many similarities and differences there are compared to Nigeria.
